TOMATO TERMS & DESCRIPTIONS

To start off lets do a quick list of some tomato terminology you may come across while searching this site.

  • Determinate plants have vines that make little or no growth once fruit is set. Harvest time is short as all the fruit developes at about the same time.
  • Indeterminate vines keep producing new shoots and blossoms even after fruit sets. Tomatoes in all stages of development may be on the vine at once and harvest is extended.
  • If you garden where disease resistance or tolerance is important, look for variety names followed by the initials V, F, FF, N, T, S, L and A. They mean the variety is resistant or tolerant to the most common tomato problems:
    • (V) -Verticillium wilt
    • (F) -Fusarium wilt race I
    • (FF) -Fusarium wilt- race II
    • (N) -Nematodes
    • (T) -Tobacco mosaic virus
    • (S) -Stemphylium (gray leaf spot)
    • (L) -Leaf spot
    • (A) -Alternaria.
  • Heirloom means that they are favorite tomato varieties whose seeds have been saved and passed down from generation to generation. These are the varieties that our grandparents and great grandparents grew many years ago.
  • Early Season
  • Mid Season
