HARVEST BRAIDS

Both onions and shallots can be braided for storage (or gift giving.)

When they are just starting to die down in the late summer, pull the plants and let the tops dry, then
interleave the tops in a looped cord so that they are held tight, you could also braid the stems.
Make sure to leave a loop at the top to hang in a warm (50 to 60 F)dry place for the winter.

Step 1
1. Tie a 3-foot length of strong string or twine to form a loop. Hang it from a hook
at a convienent working height. Tie the neck (the end with the dried top) of the
onion to the bottom part of the loop and pull tight so the onion doesn't drop out.

Step 2
2. Weave the top of the second onion over the right string, then under the left; fold
it back over the left string then under and over the right, pulling tight and
sliding it down close to the first onion.

Step 3
3. Weave in a third onion the same way, and pull it down to the left. Continue
these steps, alternating sides for each onion added, until you have 12 to 16 on a
string. Hang in a well-ventilated room in which the temperature remains around
50 to 60 degrees F.
